The Comedy of Errors

23 June – 8 July 2011

This popular Theatre Festival will run for three weeks this year, in the Wyness Hall, Jackson Street, Inverurie. The festival always produces interesting work of a high standard with a wide range of activities for every age group and taste. The highlights this year are:

23–25 June: The Comedy of Errors

Mitchell School of Drama presents a new youth theatre production of Shakespeare's comedy. This is a fresh look at the play, as it will feature music from the Fifties, a magician and, in a first for MSD, the use of puppetry. It promises to be fun!

26 June: The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen will be presented by the excellent Folding Theatre Puppet Company, director Iain Halkett. This is one of Andersen's best loved fairy tales and will be a magical treat for all ages.

The Comedy of Errors

29–30 June: The Sunshine Boys

The witty and entertaining play by Neil Simon will be presented by a new local company including four local and respected teachers of drama.

1–2 July: Catherine, the Musical

Fleeman Productions are popular visitors to the festival every year and their plays in Doric by Charles Barron are appreciated by many. This year's piece is Catherine, the Musical. It seeks to pay tribute to the great men of the Scottish Enlightenment and to its entrepreneurs and benefactors, many of whom founded schools and charities for the poor; however it also recognises that 50% of society had no opportunity to benefit from such charitable activity.

2–8 July: Create a New Musical in a Week

Garidge Theatre has recently been awarded a grant of £2000 from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. This is a charity set up to assist those who work with young people in developing their skills in Musical Theatre. Garidge Theatre does just that and thus will present a short brand new musical as part of its festival. The young people themselves will choose the theme of the piece which will be presented on 8 July.

Workshops

27 June: Drama Workshop with MSD students, for aged 9 and above

3 July: Dance Theatre Workshop with Jade Adamson, for aged 9 and above

5 July: Silly Skills, Magic and Balloon Twisting with Norn Bichan, for aged 9 and above
