Intergenerational Heritage Art Project

Inverurie Community Development Group, in partnership with the Garioch Heritage Society, was successful in securing funding to establish an Intergenerational Art Project focussing on the history, particularly the social history, of the Inverurie and Garioch area.

Local artist Penny Downes was employed to lead the group through workshops using materials from the vast archives of the Heritage Society and these were then used as templates for pictures that would form part of the materials used to create collage prints. These prints were then framed by a local picture framer Gordon Skinner, using wood salvaged from the old Locomotive Works. The framed prints will be given to the Heritage Society to hang in their new building when it opens.

Intergenerational Heritage Art Project

The workshops ran in the evenings and some Saturday mornings and we had all ages represented — from young children coming along with a grandparent, to mums and their teenage daughters. They all had a great deal of fun, and interesting discussions about Inverurie, as they worked together on collaborative pieces of art.

While many photographs of Garioch's past were used, these were combined with modern day materials, resulting in a contemporary view of the area, both past and present.

Intergenerational Heritage Art Project

We found that this way of working with the generations brings together everyone's experiences and demonstrates how the present is influenced by the past and how, in turn, today's young people can have a role in shaping their own future.

The project has now been funded for a second phase by the Heritage Society, and the group will be looking at what themes and ideas they want to explore next.

If you are interested in getting involved, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Jack Hendry at the Garioch Community Centre, tel: 01467 620353.
